Sets of sieves with known mesh sizes are used to sort sediment particles based on their sizes. Each "phi" represents a particular sieve level, or mesh screen size. The sieves are arranged in downward decreasing mesh size. The sieves are vibrated for a fixed period of time. The weight of sediment retained on each sieve is measured and converted into a percentage of the total sediment sample. The grain size data gathered into this MMIS table were acquired from multiple investigators and projects, whose research on or around the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) was funded fully or partially by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) or partner/stakeholder agencies. The intent is to build on the dataset as new reports and data become available. Data from pre-existing reports will be added to the dataset as time permits. Attribution consists of over 60 phi levels which represent the percentage of weight retained of a sample after smaller particles have been sieved. <measDesc>The MMIS data model utilizes a hierarchical structure where an ESRI enterprise geodatabase represents the top tier, and feature datasets and raster catalogs are the secondary tiers which contain groupings of similar data layers. These individual data layers were identified by MMP as important, and they make up the bottom tier. Most individual vector layers and tables are collections of data from multiple sources and across multiple dates. Extensive research went into the construction of (1) the hierarchical groupings of data (primarily by subject matter and file format) and (2) technical aspects of the data model. Data within the geodatabase was consolidated to reduce redundancy, resulting in several stand-alone tables. Relationship classes utilizing global IDs were built between vector layers and stand-alone tables in order to link disparate data. The entire MMIS data model was originally constructed using ESRI ArcGIS Diagrammer, a tool that creates and edits a geodatabase schema. The resulting geodatabase structure, data, and relationship classes were reviewed thoroughly by multiple individuals using ESRI Geodatabase Diagrammer Add-In, ESRI ArcGIS, and Microsoft Visio. ESRI Geodatabase Diagrammer Add-In creates a detailed break-down of the geodatabase and a Visio data model poster.</measDesc>

<stepDesc>The spatial and tabular data presented in this dataset was identified by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) Marine Minerals Program (MMP) for the MMIS project as being critical for MMP's decision making and management responsibilities of federal Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) mineral exploration and federal non-energy sand/gravel lease activities. The data was retrieved directly from BOEM, or another government entity, in the form of one or more ArcGIS shapefiles, raster (grid) layers, Microsoft Excel spreadsheets, XYZ files, field logs, project reports, PDF tables, and maps. This data was linked to source documents including environmental study reports and data deliverables associated with Negotiated Non-Competitive Leases or Memorandum of Agreements between BOEM and partnering agencies or contractors. First, the source data was reformatted, if needed, into an ESRI ArcGIS compatible format and then loaded into a project-specific geodatabase in its native projection. Second, the data was reprojected into the NAD83 geodetic reference system and then loaded into corresponding layers and tables in the MMIS enterprise geodatabase. Relationship classes were made between disparate layers and tables to join related data. Lastly, for use in the web application, a duplicate "publishable" MMIS enterprise geodatabase was created in a Web Mercator (Auxiliary Sphere) projection. For specific process information regarding acquisition, please reference the individual study reports.</stepDesc>

<overview>
<eaover>Studying the grain size distribution of sediment samples is important for many reasons. For example, sediments structure benthic communities because of grain size preferences by various organisms. Also, the rate and manner in which sediment particles are transported to the sea, and the rate at which they sink to the sea floor is controlled by their size. Similarly, particle size provides information about how much energy was necessary to carry that particle as well as the environment in which the particle was transported and deposited. Lastly, the grain size distribution of particles is one of the many factors used in the determination of suitability for prospective use in beach nourishment and coastal rehabilitation. The data derived from the Phi table will provide a synthesis of the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) sedimentation and geology to support a wide variety of planning and management decisions and to provide a basis for further process-oriented investigations.</eaover>
