In the metadata for that dataset, the Description/Abstract reads "The sand shoals (modeled) polygons represent the hypothesized distribution of sand shoals of the Gulf of Mexico and US Atlantic Coast based on seafloor characteristics and distance to shoreline variables. Defined by Rutecki et al. (2014), a sand shoal is "a natural, underwater ridge, bank, or bar consisting of, or covered by, sand or other unconsolidated material, resulting in shallower water depths than surrounding areas." In the dataset, attributes characterize shoals with a classification scheme developed with a basis in the Coastal and Marine Ecological Classification Standard (CMECS)."</SPAN></P></DIV></DIV></DIV></idAbs>

Depth and geomorphology metrics were derived from modified versions of the Coastal Relief Model as described in Pickens et al. (2020). The extent of analysis includes U.S. federal waters seaward of the U.S. Submerged Lands Act Boundary to a maximum depth of 50 m in the Gulf of Mexico and U.S. Atlantic Ocean. The attribution comes from a classification developed from the framework of the Coastal and Marine Ecological Classification Standard (CMECS, https://www.cmecscatalog.org/cmecs/). Information held in the attribution includes sediment grain size, percent sand, percent carbonate, percent carbonate sand, sediment area ID (from MMIS), area of the feature (square ft), percent fines, minimum depth (depth from the ocean surface), maximum depth (depth from the ocean surface), orientation (compass direction related to the orientation of the feature), minimum slope (degrees), maximum slope (degrees), bathymetric position index, rugosity, Geoform (CMECS), Substrate Component (SC) Class (CMECS), SC Subclass (CMECS), SC Group (CMECS), SC Subgroup (CMECS), percent clay, and percent silt."</suppInfo>

<measDesc>The MMIS data model utilizes a hierarchical structure where an ESRI enterprise geodatabase represents the top tier, and feature datasets and raster catalogs are the secondary tiers which contain groupings of similar data layers. These individual data layers were identified by MMP as important, and they make up the bottom tier. Most individual vector layers and tables are collections of data from multiple sources and across multiple dates. Extensive research went into the construction of (1) the hierarchical groupings of data (primarily by subject matter and file format) and (2) technical aspects of the data model. Data within the geodatabase was consolidated to reduce redundancy, resulting in several stand-alone tables. Relationship classes utilizing global IDs were built between vector layers and stand-alone tables in order to link disparate data. The entire MMIS data model was originally constructed using ESRI ArcGIS Diagrammer, a tool that creates and edits a geodatabase schema. The resulting geodatabase structure, data, and relationship classes were reviewed thoroughly by multiple individuals using ESRI Geodatabase Diagrammer Add-In, ESRI ArcGIS, and Microsoft Visio. ESRI Geodatabase Diagrammer Add-In creates a detailed break-down of the geodatabase and a Visio data model poster.</measDesc>
