<idAbs>

The Study Area Survey Measurements Mosaic Dataset is a collection of bathymetry and backscatter rasters compiled from numerous site-specific, field-oriented studies in the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS). The studies are fully or partially funded by BOEM, an agency within the U.S. Department of the Interior. They consist of sand resource reconnaissance surveys, sand placement surveys, research on baseline benthic ecological conditions, and environmental impact investigations pertaining to the potential effects of dredging operations on the physical, chemical, and biological environment. These data span several decades of published research and were collected and processed using a variety of instruments and software. Please refer to individual raster attributes and the associated study report(s) for details related to data acquisition and processing. This dataset will be updated regularly as new and existing data are incorporated into the Marine Minerals Information System (MMIS) geodatabase. Area covered: U.S. OCS (primarily 3nm to 12nm offshore). Each raster in this mosaic is stored in its native projection. The rasters are projected into NAD83 on the fly by the MMIS WebViewer. Should a user export a raster from the database, or download it through the viewer, the downloaded file will be in the native projection.

</idAbs>

<measDesc>The MMIS data model utilizes a hierarchical structure where an ESRI enterprise geodatabase represents the top tier, and feature datasets and raster catalogs are the secondary tiers which contain groupings of similar data layers. These individual data layers were identified by MMP as important, and they make up the bottom tier. Most individual vector layers and tables are collections of data from multiple sources and across multiple dates. Extensive research went into the construction of (1) the hierarchical groupings of data (primarily by subject matter and file format) and (2) technical aspects of the data model. Data within the geodatabase was consolidated to reduce redundancy, resulting in several stand-alone tables. Relationship classes utilizing global IDs were built between vector layers and stand-alone tables in order to link disparate data. The entire MMIS data model was originally constructed using ESRI ArcGIS Diagrammer, a tool that creates and edits a geodatabase schema. The resulting geodatabase structure, data, and relationship classes were reviewed thoroughly by multiple individuals using ESRI Geodatabase Diagrammer Add-In, ESRI ArcGIS, and Microsoft Visio. ESRI Geodatabase Diagrammer Add-In creates a detailed break-down of the geodatabase and a Visio data model poster.</measDesc>

<statement>Mosaic dataset created. The Study Area Rasters include raster versions of survey measurement data: Bathymetry (MB (Mulitbeam), SB (Singlebeam), LI (LiDAR), IF (Interferometric)), Magnetometer, and Sidescan Sonar (SSS). A copy of the individual rasters are stored in fGDBs in web accessible folders and referenced through mosaics in the MMIS SDE.</statement>
<prcStep>
<stepDesc>The raster data presented in this dataset was identified by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) Marine Minerals Program (MMP) for the MMIS project as being critical for MMP's decision making and management responsibilities of Federal outer Continental Shelf (OCS) mineral exploration and Federal non-energy sand/gravel lease activities. The data were received in various formats and converted to a file geodatabase readable raster format, as necessary. Rasters were then loaded into a study-specific file geodatabase (fGDB) and copied into mosaic-specific fGDBs hosted in a web accessible folder. Rasters are stored external to the MMIS SDE in their native projections and re-projected on the fly by their parent mosaic and in the study-specific file. Rasters mosaic dataset in the MMIS enterprise geodatabase, which re-projects all included rasters into NAD83 on the fly. Lastly, for use in the web application, a duplicate "publishable" MMIS enterprise geodatabase was created, and footprints of the rasters are displayed. For specific process information regarding acquisition, please reference the individual study reports.</stepDesc>
